HOW’S THE NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS GOING? I CAN TELL YOU I’M ALREADY SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING ‘NEW YEAR, NEW YOU’!!!
Look a new year is like a clean slate – and we all love a fresh clean slate to work off, it’s like getting out the new notebook and the fancy pens and starting from scratch….
But the thing is you can do that any time of the year – any time you choose!!
But the main thing that grates me about ‘New Year Resolutions’ is most people are only focusing on the END GOAL, the OUTCOME, their FINAL DESIRED RESULT.
Great, we all need goals to strive for and the New Year and the new dose of motivation is the perfect time to set these… BUT…
Even more importantly than the end goal, what we need to focus on is how do you want to FEEL on the journey to your desired outcome?
Yep, getting a little woo woo on you here, but honestly – the OUTCOME isn’t really the important bit…. what if you don’t actually achieve the outcome? What if you fall short? Would you rather have enjoyed the process, the journey, and FELT amazing and inspired and proud of yourself throughout the journey, so much so that the end result almost becomes irrelevant?
The way I’m creating my INTENTIONS (note: not ‘resolutions’ !) for 2017 is to focus on how I want to FEEL. Not only how I want to feel when I achieve my goals, but how I want to feel as I journey towards them.
BECAUSE AS DANIELLE LAPORTE SO ELOQUENTLY PUTS IT,
“WHEN YOU GET CLEAR ON HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL, THE PURSUIT ITSELF WILL BECOME MORE SATISFYING”.
So how do you want to FEEL this year?
I have chosen three over-arching feelings that I choose to live my life by this year – and any decisions I make, or intentions I set, I will ask myself, “Does this allow me to feel the way I want to feel?”
MY THREE FEELINGS ARE:
I want to ensure that within my business life, my relationships, my health, and the way I’m treating others and showing up in the world makes me feel balanced, energised and nourished – and not only makes me feel that, but others too. My focus on these feelings will naturally overflow to those around me.
- I want my business and the people I come into contact with to feel balanced, energised and nourished.
- I want my relationships to feel balanced, energised and nourished.
- I want my children to feel balanced, energised and nourished.
Get the picture?!
By knowing this is how I want to feel, when I set a goal, for example to start a new exercise regime, or create a new course for my business, or even just how I daily interact with my husband and kids, I can stop and ask myself, “is this decision going to make me feel balanced, energised and nourished, in every sense of each word?”
So when setting the big goals, let’s say to triple my business this year, lose 10kgs and run a marathon (which are all great goals, don’t get me wrong!), I will first set the intention of how I want to feel, and if blowing up my business, or losing 10kgs or running a marathon is NOT going to allow me to feel balanced, energised and nourished in ALL areas of my life and in every sense of the word, then I’ll re-evaluate, and perhaps change the goal to suit how I really want to FEEL.
But if achieving those goals is going to allow me to feel all that, then yes I’ll go for it – BUT if I only double my business, only lose 8kgs and only run a half mara, then at least I will have FELT good and stayed true to myself in the process.
Spend some time working out your core desired feelings for 2017, then see how they fit into your New Year Resolutions. This will ensure you set goals that are in alignment with how you want to feel, rather than setting goals that stress you out the moment you’ve written them down!
Life’s too short to live it focused on anything less than how you truly want to feel…
